Our fitness segment examined the training methods and popularity of obstacle course competition Tuesday on News 8 at Sunrise.
John Hutchings of Healthy Edge Media and Colin Vega of the VIP Fit Club in Macedon led the discussion. Hutchings cited the popularity of programs like the Warrior Dash and Spartan race as it relates to the rise of interest in obstacle course training. Vega said when it comes to preparing for obstacle course competition, the focus in on functional fitness. Everything from a tire flip to rope pull ups helps develop the core strength and cardio endurance necessary to compete.
Vega said everyone from moms and dads to sons and daughters can take part. "It's not how you finish, it's a matter of just finishing the race," he noted.
The benefits of the training were displayed on part of a 10 obstacle course near the VIP Fit Club. Vega has organized a Summer Challenge Series. The next race will be August 13.
